The layout of computers around the perimeter of the room works much better then rows of computers across the middle of the room. I requested a few tables for the middle of the room for collaborative work. (My admins are awesome and always come through for me! )
The room was lacking color, cheer and warmth, so I decided to add some large computer screen murals to the walls. These will be my bulletin boards to display student work and course concepts. I am still in need of furniture, such as, a bookcase and maybe another table or two. I was also thinking of getting little lamps to put between computers for task lighting when we opt not to turn on the overhead fluorescent. (Ala New York Public Library)
In the modern classroom there is still a need for low tech supplies. Clipboards, whiteboards and of course chalkboards! Students love to use the clipboards to lean on while taking notes. I also use the clipboards between computers to organize reference sheets that I have laminated to extend their lives. Whiteboards and chalkboards are great for brainstorming ideas. I use unframed boards. The students lay them across their legs to form a table.
